How To Prevent Default Save to Onedrive at Save Dialog - Microsoft Office 2019
If you're a student or someone who often create new documents on Microsoft Word or Excel or Powerpoint and save it using CTRL+S, you often deal with something that makes you can't just press enter to continue saving it: the dialog shows the OneDrive location as default.
So you will take some extra steps to browse for a folder, or as simple as choosing My Documents, then proceed to save the document. But what if you prefer just pressing CTRL+S then ENTER but the location is automatically set to My Documents? Here's the simple extra steps to make you reduce the extra steps in saving the document.
Office 2016 Update or Office 365
The Microsoft Support page here described a simple way to change default location in the new save dialog. When the save dialog appears, you just need to click the drop down on the location, then choose a folder and click at the "Set As Default Location" folder. That way, even you click "Cancel" after doing that, when you CTRL+S again, you will see the "Location" will directly using your chosen folder, instead of OneDrive.
In Mac OS version of Office, instead of button, you will see a checkbox after choosing a folder in a custom save location.
Using Registry
Instruction provided can't applied to you? Try using registry. Browse this registry using regedit and change the following key provided below:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\General\PreferCloudSaveLocations
Set the value to 0 (zero) to enable Save to Computer by default.
Office 2019 or Newer UpdatesBoth method above are not working for me (lol). But notice in the first screenshot, you got a blue "default" tag beside OneDrive. In newer Office (mine: Office 2019 Pro Plus), you got three dots beside the default tag, meaning there is a menu in each option to select.
Select the three dots in your preferred save location, and select Set As Default Location (optionally you could pin the location too!)
Now after you done that, everytime you click CTRL+S, or even closes the doc without saving yet, the save dialog box shows the location with your chosen location. So you could simply hit enter to save it directly without changing it.
I haven't done it on my Mac yet, I will update this article when I use my mac again. Usually I use my Mac to make videos for my Youtube, so if I haven't update this article, means I not even touching my Mac yet :)
